Mastercard executive: Bitcoin is too volatile to be part of its network

Mastercard made waves when the payment services giant announced earlier this month that its plan is to start allowing cryptocurrencies onto its network.

But don’t expect bitcoin BTCUSD, -0.38% to be part of that.

Ann Cairns, executive vice chair at Mastercard MA, -3.47%, told the Future of Money conference that bitcoin wouldn’t really work for its plans.

“Bitcoin doesn’t behave like a payment instrument,” she said. “It’s too volatile and it takes too long to transact.”

“So if you and I went for a cup of coffee, and you know, I decided to pay with bitcoin, our coffee might cost me, I don’t know, 40% more by the time it was served — and it takes 10 minutes to actually settle the transaction,” she said.

That is probably an exaggerated version of bitcoin’s actual volatility, but bitcoin futures BTC.1, -2.29% have seen five daily swings of at least 10% this year.

Cairns said it is more useful to think of bitcoin like gold GC00, -1.60%, as an asset class, rather than a payment instrument.

Mastercard wants to bring so-called stablecoins onto its networks, and is working with central banks on their plans for digital currencies, she said.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the central bank is looking at a digital currency but emphasized there was no need to do it quickly.

Let the market determine bitcoin’s value

The writer is senior counsel at Wilkie Farr & Gallagher, co-founder of the Digital Dollar Project and former chair of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission

Bitcoin’s price is bouncing around $50,000 giving it an aggregate value near $1tn. The digital currency is increasingly part of the modern financial landscape. The venerable BNY Mellon is now handling bitcoin, Mastercard is integrating it into its payments systems and Tesla bought $1.5bn of bitcoin for its corporate treasury.

Understanding this phenomenon requires separating two queries: what is bitcoin and what is it worth? First, bitcoin is a decentralised, digital representation of value that functions more or less as a medium of exchange, a unit of account and a store of value. It runs on a decentralised peer-to-peer network of computers that validate and log transactions on a permanent, public distributed ledger, known as blockchain. In some ways, bitcoin is not unlike the collective composition of Wikipedia.

From the start, the internet enabled the sharing of information globally, instantaneously, and from person to person. Now bitcoin is part of the latest internet wave using technology to move valuable things — such as money — just as quickly and directly.

Supporters believe bitcoin’s design provides a technological solution to the age-old verification problem of ensuring that unique items of value are sent only once to a valid recipient. Instead of trusted, central authorities, bitcoin uses a decentralised, rules-based, open consensus mechanism. They argue that this innovation will expand access to financial services, ease remittances, reduce the cost of global economic activity and strengthen individual privacy.

Critics argue that this is all hype and technological alchemy. To them, bitcoin is highly volatile and speculative, performs no socially useful function and, worse, can be used to evade law or conduct illicit finance. They see its heightened valuation as a fever and a bubble akin to the 17th century “tulip mania”.

There is no shortage of opinions on bitcoin. For some, it is a technological revolution, a highly appreciating asset, a hedge against monetary depreciation and a rebuke to the existing financial system. For others, it’s a fraud, an object of manipulation and a way to separate the unsuspecting from their money.

However, there is one thing that bitcoin is not. It is not a government construct. It is a social one. It bears no sovereign imprimatur, travels on no government payment rails and settles no government obligations. Perhaps most crucially, it is not subject to government monetary control. This freedom from central bank devaluation may be what most excites its champions.

That leads to the other question: what is bitcoin worth? Of course, the opposing views of its utility stir opposing views of its value. Fortunately, forums exist to resolve those competing views. In fact, since 2017, regulated bitcoin US futures and options marketplaces have aggregated liquidity, distributed bids and offers, matched buyers with sellers and settled trades in both cash and physical bitcoin. The total volume of open bitcoin futures hit $18.9bn earlier this month. This deepening pool of trading liquidity provides essential price discovery and allows both sides of the debate to express their opinion of bitcoin’s worth.

The launch of regulated US bitcoin futures initially faced scepticism — especially from central bankers concerned that it would “legitimise” the currency. Now they allow investors to conduct price discovery, transact in transparent and orderly markets and establish fair market value.

Bitcoin’s beauty may be in the eye of the beholder. Yet, one need not be a bitcoin “maximalist” to take comfort knowing that its worth is increasingly determined, not by the government, but by active give and take in well-regulated and liquid markets. This alone may be cause for some to deride bitcoin. For many others, it’s a reason to “HODL” — that’s bitcoin slang for go long.

Earn Passive Income Over the Internet With These 18 Easy Ways

If you want to make money in 2021, we have a few great passive income ideas for you. Below is a list of 18 ways to make money online, passively and easily. Despite the great variety, you probably already heard about some of them before. Go through them all and choose the methods that are best for you.

Are you ready to earn passive income online?

Start making YouTube videos.

Making videos for YouTube is a fast-growing sport. Nowadays, you can film from anywhere with high-quality cameras even on your phone. And the videos you make can really be about anything. Think of makeup, sports, crypto, and someone’s daily life (vlogging or keeping an internet diary).

The possibilities are endless!

1 - Start making YouTube videos to generate passive income

You will spend a lot of time making videos, especially when they are still subject to editing. When finished, however, they can create passive income online for a long time. You will earn with “Google Adsense” ads that are displayed on your videos.

Who can teach you better to become a super YouTube, than PewDiePie with his 100M subscribers?

https://youtu.be/bVu8OWN90eY

You get paid every time someone looks at or clicks on this ad. The price per view is low, we are not talking about crazy money here, but if you have many views, it is becoming a bigger stream of income, especially when you create content daily.

Big Youtube stars, whose videos get hundreds of thousands of views every day, are making a full-time income just from Youtube.

Create a website for affiliate marketing.

Another very interesting way, especially for people with an existing blog or website: is affiliate marketing. You can use this to place links on your blog that promote products. For example, you will receive a fixed amount or percentage of the sale for every order placed via your link. Do you have many visitors who are interested in certain products or services? Then you can certainly build a nice passive income with affiliate marketing!

Read also our popular blog post:

how much can you earn with affiliate marketing

There are numerous platforms where you can find companies that do affiliate marketing. They want to sell something, preferably through as many channels as possible. If your website has enough visitors, those companies are eager to do business with you. However, you can also start a very targeted micro niche website that will generate revenue with even smaller traffic.

The best way is to create a website or blog is to choose a topic you are passionate about, and promote products or services that are relevant to this niche. That increases your conversion rates!

Sell your photos on the internet.

Do you like photography? If so, you may be able to generate a nice source of passive income with your photos. You can post photos taken on so-called stock photo websites, such as Shutterstock or iStockphoto. This way, you will receive a fixed amount or percentage for every customer who buys your photos through that website.

If you make a nice portfolio, you can earn a great deal of money through it. Posting your photos is not difficult. The complete process is fully automatic. And the great thing is… every photo you take can be sold again and again and generate compound revenue. Ideal, right?

Keep in mind that your photos have to be really good and high quality. It is smart to look at what is already in high demand. So make them slightly with a commercial slant; this works best 9 times out of 10!

Write an e-book

Writing an e-book seems like a lot of work at first… and it is! But once completed, it can be a fruitful source of income. Your book can be sold via your own website, but also, e.g., via Amazon or ClickBank. This way, you reach a broad audience in one go, but make sure that your e-book is worth reading.

You can write about anything, but you must know a lot about the subject. Give the reader a lot of useful information, use the right words, make it exciting and easy to read. Have you ever run into a problem that no one is writing about yet? Then you might have a gold mine in your hands.

Even with 1 good book, you can earn a nice passive income for a long time… because the sales could be unlimited!

Sell your own products.

Creating your own products can be considered a very broad topic, where you can sell just about anything. You can make your own products or have them produced cheaply in countries such as China.

You will have to build your own website for this, where customers can order the products. Another way is to place products on Amazon, which increases the chance of even more sales.

Marie Leslie selling her own products online

Always make sure that you have your own website anyway.

When you sell your own products, you have higher profit margins, more freedom, possibly more market dominance, and many sales opportunities. This way, you can quickly make more sales via large platforms (such as Amazon). They can even arrange the complete handling of your orders, leaving you more time for marketing and creativity.

Regardless of the time you put in, this is a great source of a passive income!

Adopt a blog that already exists

Are you able to get an existing blog for a good price? Then you can also earn a very nice passive income with this blog. Blogs are being created all the time, but not all of these blogs are used to their full potential.

So make smart use of this idea.

You can do this with Google Adsense and affiliate marketing. Blogs with a lot of authority and monthly traffic are ideal for this. In financial terms, you should keep about 24 times the monthly income of the blog’s price. If the income is $300 per month (preferably consistent for several years), then you have a price of $7200. It is, of course, better if you can manage for less.

Pay attention to whether it is really a nice blog, or whether the owner wants to get rid of it for another reason. Savvy affiliate marketers make $10k from their websites, so there is definitely some room for making money!

Start an e-shop

Starting an e-shop is also a good idea, where your own products are not necessarily required. Starting an e-shop in a niche where your passion lies – makes it more fun and profitable. You can start small… and when everything goes well, expand your range with more related products.

m-commerce

You have to do a lot of work for it, but you will generate more and more passive income.

However, don’t want to be occupied with your eshop, all the time? Then you can automate a number of processes. For example, you can opt for dropshipping, where products go directly from the manufacturer or wholesaler to your customers. You can also place the storage of products at Amazon or ShareASale and have the complete fulfillment arranged by these parties. This saves you time, and you also get a lot of “exposure” for your products.

Plenty of features that may take some time in the beginning, will create passive income online later on autopilot!

Be a referring resource.

Any small (start-up) business can use referrals, which lead to more sales. Make a list of companies that you regularly turn to and that you can recommend to others. Then, ask them if they give you some sort of commission when customers come to those companies through you. It can lead to a nice side-stream of earnings.

You can even create a website for this with recommendations or quotations (something like a portal). Also, use social media and other online ways to increase exposure. When you approach it a little smarter, your earnings can suddenly add up.

It is, of course, important that you do not spend too much time on it. But it quite easily causes a snowball effect. In this way, you also build up real passive income, and you can do other interesting things while the money is being generated on autopilot.

Create an app

You can also start building an app. Yes, I know it’s not for everyone, but it’s not THAT hard. You have to ask yourself a number of questions.

  • What do you want your app to do?
  • How do you make the app attractive to users?
  • What problem do you solve with it?
  • How do users’ lives become simpler with your app?
  • And how are you going to market your app?

Of course, many developers want to release an app, so really stand out.

facebook application icon

It starts with a good idea, but then you also have to spend time developing it. Your app can be complex, but also super simple. Think of some games that literally don’t make sense, but have a great playtime. With the addition of advertisements, you can earn a lot of passive income with apps.

You can buy under-developed apps for a very low price, which will add up with massive use. This way, you can earn money for years with 1 made app.

If you are a beginner, ready to get started have a look at this detailed video tutorial

Develop an online course

Everyone is an expert at something, so why not create an online course for this? It can be a great source of a passive income!

You can approach this in different ways. For example, there are websites like Udemy.com, with millions of students looking for new online courses every day. You can also post your online course on many other websites, including Amazon, of course. There are plenty of sales channels where you can sell an online course, just use Google to find what suits best.

Now it is important to make an excellent online course. If you post your online course on international platforms, you will have to make it in English. The use of video lessons, checklists, small e-books for support, images, and, for example, an audio version to reinforce your content.

Also, make 3 different packages with corresponding price categories. This way, you reach every customer, so that you take full advantage of the customers’ volume and earn more.

Google Adsense

Google Adsense really is one of the simplest ways to create passive income online. You place advertisements on your website or blog and don’t have to do anything about it.

https://youtu.be/YSqOvgfbPhI

The income is generated every time when visitors click on your ads.

Although you only earn a few cents per click, it can add up when you get a lot of visitors. The percentage that clicks on it every day can thus lead from nice pocket money to a whole monthly income.

make money with google adsense - generate passive income online

So it works best when you have a website that is well visited. It can also help to take over an existing website. You can also combine Adsense very well with, for example, affiliate marketing or other revenue models. This way, you build up more and more income with one website.

What are the best spots for Google Adsense?

Pay attention to where you place the ads. The best locations for this on your website are

  • inside the content
  • in the header
  • and the sidebar’s left side

Also, make sure you use the recommended dimensions that Google uses. And use ads with images, but also with text only. According to measurements, that combination yields the most!

Donations

Placing a donation button can also lead to passive income. It may not be a constant source of income, but it can add up.

You work hard on your website, without perhaps getting paid. Some visitors are happy to lend you a hand. When this happens regularly, you can earn nice with it.

The best way is to post new content regularly and to be really valuable for your visitors. In this way, you build up a community bit by bit… so that people are also more inclined to make a donation.

You can use Paypal for this, for example, by making a donation button with your account (or just create it first). And then place it on your website. Most people have a Paypal account and can donate some money for free and quickly.

You can also receive donations on Youtube.

You can also receive donations on Youtube. In addition to a passive income on YouTube with your videos, it is an extra way to generate income quickly!

It often happens in live streams, where you can sometimes see the amounts increase considerably. Ok, you will have to build a large audience first. But there is a very good chance that they will give you something. Suppose you do a 1-hour live stream in which you answer questions. Then you can earn a nice extra cent with this. And your live stream can be viewed again later, where you place advertisements again. So do you regularly combine normal videos with live streams? Then you can earn money in 2 ways.

With donations, it is, of course, true that you get them. It is nice when your subscribers make a donation. This gives you extra for all your efforts.

Selling advertising space

Do you have a website or blog with many visitors? Then you can also make advertising space available for companies that want to advertise on your website. For example, you can place a banner in the header for a fixed amount per month. With a few banners, you earn a lot of money.

Create manuals

Are you looking for additional ways in which you can earn passive income? Then writing manuals might be your cup of tea.

You can create very extensive manuals for the most specific topics. A manual helps people to achieve a certain goal step by step. Usually, this is accompanied by a small fee.

Another way is to offer the manual for free, using a different revenue model. Think of Google Adsense, affiliate links, subscriptions, or other things.

It’s a smart way to make extra money!

Invest in real estate through crowdfunding

Invest in real estate through crowdfunding

Investing in real estate is a very profitable way to create passive income on the internet. However, buying a house or apartment is not really cheap. You will therefore need to have equity capital or borrow it from the bank.

But there are also ways to do it differently. For example, you can invest in real estate through crowdfunding. You don’t have to put in a large amount right away, and you can start with a few hundred euros.

For example, if you look at the Fundrise.com website, you will see that around 8.7 to 12.4% interest can be earned with this. You do not have a guarantee for a fixed percentage, but you will earn extra money anyway.

Investing in stocks

Buying stocks can also create passive income online for you for a long time. In many cases, you buy shares, and you also claim a part of the profit (dividend) every 3 months. Are you going to buy shares? Then do this from companies that are reliable and likely to make more and more profit.

blue and yellow graph on stock market monitor

You can also learn more about how stock markets work. That way, you will be better able to buy stocks at a low point. Certainly, there is not always something wrong with the company for the larger companies when shares are low. If the shares then go up again, you can take advantage of the increases.

Depending on how much you invest, you can earn a nice passive income for a longer period of time!

Borrowing peer-to-peer (P2P)

It’s probably not your first idea to create passive income online. But it can be profitable to borrow peer-to-peer. You receive interest on money that you lend to others.

Borrowing peer-to-peer

Some people are not eligible to borrow through traditional financial services providers. However, some platforms lend it to that

makes people possible. You can register yourself, and that way, lend money to others. This does not even have to be very large amounts.

You will then receive interest on the borrowed money.

In most cases, it will earn you some extra money, but also carefully consider the risks. There are different categories, namely low risk, medium risk, and high risk. They indicate the risk of guaranteeing the loan. So pay attention to this!

Make money with things you already do

You can earn money with things you already do. This includes reading emails, shopping online, and searching the internet.

Of course, it does not bring in much, compared to the other ways mentioned. But it is a method to earn something extra, for which you do not have to do anything extra.

However, we recommend going other ways.

Bitcoin hits new record of $50,000

Digital currency Bitcoin has risen to a new record high of more than $50,000 (£36,000).

The so-called cryptocurrency, which was created by an unknown inventor, has risen about 72% this year.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are generated by computers. Part of its supposed value comes from the finite number that can be computed.

But regulators have warned that they are risky, since their value can change fast, both downwards and upwards.

Much of this year's gain for Bitcoin came after Elon Musk's Tesla bought $1.5bn of them and said it would accept them as payment for its cars.

Supporters say Bitcoin can act as a store of value, like a digital version of gold.

"If that narrative comes to fruition, then the growth potential is off the charts as $50,000 per bitcoin equates to a market cap of roughly $931bn, which is almost 9% of gold," said John Wu, president at blockchain company Ava Labs.

"If BTC meets gold's market cap, then that would be at least $500,000 per bitcoin."

'Explosive growth'

Unlike other commodities, however, Bitcoin cannot be used for anything else, merely bought and sold. This has made attempts to value it difficult.

Pricing is also susceptible to large swings because of the limited number which are traded. Many supporters are holding on to them in anticipation of higher valuations. Should they all sell at once, the price could tumble.

With no intrinsic value, unlike a physical asset such as land, and no ability to generate an income, unlike a company or bond, cryptocurrencies are extremely volatile and can crash as fast as they rise.

Critics point out that while Bitcoin may have a finite supply of units - 21 million - the number of cryptocurrencies is ever-growing and potentially limitless.

People have lost large amounts of money in steep drops in the value of cryptocurrencies and in hacks and scams associated with them.

Britain's financial watchdog, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), opened 52 investigations into suspected cryptocurrency frauds in the year to 30 June 2020, according to a Freedom of Information request from law firm RPC.

That was fewer than the 59 opened in the previous 12 months, sparking speculation that the regulator was short of resources to tackle cryptocurrency frauds.

"Given explosive growth in high-risk cryptocurrency and related frauds, we would expect the number of FCA investigations to jump up and not fall away," said Sam Tate, partner at RPC.

"The sheen of respectability now being given to cryptocurrencies is being taken advantage of by cyber-criminals and online fraudsters."

The FCA declined to comment on the figures.

Bitcoin's value dropped by $5,000 on 4 January to about $29,000 before recovering the lost ground. On 11 Jan, it dropped $9,000 to $32,000.

Because cryptocurrencies can pass international borders quickly and are not regulated in the same way as cash or regular investments, investigating thefts is hard.

Last month, the FCA issued a stark warning to investors in so-called cryptoassets.

The financial watchdog said investors should be "prepared to lose all their money" should their investment's value collapse.

But regulators […]

2025: Jaguar car brand to be all-electric

Jaguar Land Rover's Jaguar brand will be all-electric by 2025, the carmaker has said.

The company will launch electric models of its entire Jaguar and Land Rover line-up by 2030, it added.

The firm said it would keep all three of its three British plants open as part of its new strategy.

But it has dropped plans to build an electric version of its XJ saloon at the Castle Bromwich plant, meaning the site will eventually stop making cars.

Chief executive Thierry Bolloré said the plant would focus instead on "non-production" activities in the long term, without giving details.

The company plans to spend about £2.5bn a year on new technology for its cars.

This is a big move for Jaguar Land Rover, but the reality is it has little choice.

Like other manufacturers, it is under pressure to reduce the CO2 emissions from its fleet, as new regulations come into force in Europe and elsewhere. At the same time, sales of diesels - which generally produce less CO2 than petrol engines - have been plummeting.

And in the longer term, the UK government wants to outlaw the sale of all wholly petrol and diesel cars from 2030. Governments in other countries are moving in the same general direction.

The problem is, electric cars cost more to design and build than conventional models, meaning it is currently hard to make a profit from them. Bigger manufacturers can throw money at the problem now, and hope to benefit from economies of scale later.

JLR is a smaller company and can't do that - so instead it will re-emphasise Jaguar's credentials as a luxury brand when it goes all-electric.

That might make sense from a marketing point of view, but making the sums add up looks like a steep challenge.

2px presentational grey line

It will also invest in hydrogen fuel cell technology. Fuel cells provide electric power, without producing tailpipe emissions - water is the only by-product.

However, in order for them to be truly environmentally friendly, the hydrogen itself needs to be produced using renewable sources.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the announcement was "a huge step for British car manufacturing".

Carmakers are under pressure to meet stringent carbon emission demands in Europe and China, as well as customer demand for high-performance electric cars with a luxury or performance feel.

The UK plans to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030.

Luxury car brand Bentley Motors, owned by Germany's Volkswagen, said in November its range will be fully electric by 2030, and last month General Motors said it aimed to have a zero tailpipe emission line-up by 2035.

The Best Sleep Week Deals

A good night’s sleep can leave you feeling energized and ready to tackle the day, no matter what it (or the world) throws at you. But to get there, you first need to fall asleep and stay that way, something easier said than done these days. Although creating a cozy bedroom is not the cure for insomnia, it can help—and with these special Wirecutter Sleep Week deals, you can do it for less.

Mattress deals

If you’ve been holding out for a good deal on the mattress of your dreams before finally investing, it’s time to kiss those sleepless nights goodbye. Senior staff writer Joanne Chen says in our mattress buying guide that your primary consideration should be comfort, but you can get the best of both worlds during Sleep Week (as long as your preferred mattress type is on sale).

WinkBed (Luxury Firm)

$1600 $1250 from WinkBeds

Use promo code WIRECUTTER

The foam-layer WinkBed is fluffy and soft, yet it still provides a medium-firm feel that doesn’t compromise on motion isolation or edge support. Delivery can take about two weeks, but our guide writer thinks it’s worth the wait. For added peace of mind, WinkBeds offers a 120-night trial period (though exchanges are subject to a $50 fee); if you change your mind after the trial period has passed, WinkBeds will allow you to exchange the mattress for half the cost plus shipping and haul-away fees. The price indicated is for the queen size.

Tuft & Needle Original

$560 $476 from Tuft & Needle

Use promo code WIRECUTTERPRES

The Tuft & Needle Original is unusual in that it’s a foam mattress without the memory-foam top layer that hugs the body. Though it isn’t the best for folks who weigh over 200 pounds, the Tuft & Needle Original is a solid, medium-firm mattress that works well with any sleep position. It’s also a great choice if a bed partner moves around at night, since it isolates motion very well. This affordable mattress comes with a 100-day trial and a 10-year warranty. The price indicated is for the queen size.

Saatva Classic (Luxury Firm)

$1400 $1024 from Saatva

You save $376 (27%)

Bouncy and plush, the Saatva Classic is a great innerspring mattress that can work for all sleepers. One of the few spring mattresses you can buy online, the Saatva Classic is made with a soft top and pocketed coils that add a good amount of bounce without feeling too jiggly. Our testers loved the comfortable Saatva; one called it “luxurious without being too suffocating.” Though Saatva offers a generous 120-day trial period, keep in mind that the company charges a $100 return fee. The price indicated is for the queen size.

Leesa Hybrid

$1600 $1360 from Leesa

Use promo code WIRECUTTER

The Leesa Hybrid, one of our top picks for the best memory-foam mattress you can buy online, combines the best elements of memory-foam and spring mattresses by balancing a conforming cushioning top with a gentle bounce. The durable, dense memory-foam top cradles you and provides good pressure relief, while the spring layer adds just enough bounce and offers good pressure-relieving support. We’re confident that this is one of the best prices you’ll find on the Leesa Hybrid all year. The price indicated is for the queen size.

Pillow deals

Believe it or not, your pillow plays just as big a role in a good night’s sleep as your mattress. The right pillow supports and cradles your head, eliminating shoulder and neck pain in only a few nights. The wrong pillow, in contrast, can very well be the source of pain. If it’s time for you to leave fitful, sleepless nights in the past, you can pick up the right pillow for a fraction of the price.

Ecosa Pillow

$80 $68 from Ecosa

Use promo code WIRECUTTER

What sets the Ecosa Pillow apart from our other pillow picks is its contoured shape: It hugs the curve of the neck and offers extra support for back- or side-sleepers, which can help alleviate migraines, sinus headaches, and chronic neck pain. Highly customizable, the soft yet still supportive Ecosa is pricier than our other memory-foam pillow picks, but it’s still one of our favorites.

Bedding and linen deals

Comfort is key when it comes to bedding, and these soft, cozy picks are all at great prices during Wirecutter Sleep Week.

Cultiver Linen Duvet Cover

$260 $208 from Cultiver

Use promo code WIRECUTTER20

Linen is a great material for folks who tend to overheat at night—it feels light on the skin and wicks away moisture better than cotton. The Cultiver Linen Duvet Cover is soft, smooth, and extremely breathable, and as our guide writer mentions, its coarse texture lends an “artfully rumpled” look to a bed. It also comes in 17 colors and prints, so you’re likely to find something that matches your style. The price indicated is for the queen size.

Cultiver Linen Sheets

$385 $308 from Cultiver

Use promo code WIRECUTTER20

The Cultiver Linen Sheet Set, one of the softer linen sets we’ve tested, includes a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and two pillowcases. Just like the duvet cover, these sheets are smooth, airy, and durable enough that the fabric won’t start to wear thin prematurely—in fact, one of our long-term testers has been using her Cultiver top sheet since 2017 and says it’s the only linen sheet that hasn’t developed holes. The price indicated is for the queen-sized set.

Authenticity 50 A50 Duvet Cover

$190 $161 from Authenticity 50

Use promo code WIRECUTTER

As the lightest duvet cover we tested, the Authenticity 50 A50 Duvet Cover is made of breathable, lightweight percale that may appeal to folks who sleep hot. Comfortable and warm to sleep under during chilly nights, the A50 weighs only 2 pounds, so it doesn’t add a lot of extra weight to a comforter. Made entirely in the United States, this durable cover uses long-staple American-grown cotton that’ll last for years. The price indicated is for the queen size.

Brooklinen Classic Duvet Cover

Brooklinen Classic Core Sheet Set

$140 $113 from Brooklinen

Use promo code WCSLEEPWEEK

For a slightly more affordable set of lighter-weight sheets, consider the Brooklinen Classic Core Sheet Set. Though they feel a little thinner, less crisp, and less soft than some of our other summer-sheet picks, the Brooklinen Classic Core sheets are very breathable and still feel great against the skin. During the night, our testers found that these sheets were comfortable to sleep on and capable of regulating body temperature well—a big plus for those who sleep hot. The price indicated is for the queen-sized set.

Baloo Cool Cotton Weighted Blanket

$169 $125 from Baloo Living

You save $44 (26%)

The Baloo also comes with a 30-day return policy and a lifetime guarantee on materials and workmanship. The price indicated is for the 15-pound blanket.

In general, woven lattice towels can be pricey, but these Onsen towels are less than half the price of similarly styled towels, and they still look upscale and feel luxurious. The 16 Best Last-Minute Valentine’s Day Gifts

The red-and-pink heart-ification of every aisle in Walgreens beginning the day after Christmas should have served as your warning. We get it—sometimes Valentine’s Day just creeps up. But fear not! Whether you’re giving something to a beloved friend or to the cuffing-season lover you snagged just in time for winter, there’s still time to win the day. The gifts here can ship in under two days or arrive in an inbox in less than two seconds, so you can quickly get something great at the last minute.

Pop secret

W + P Collapsible Ppcorn Bowl, full of popcorn, with the lid resting against the bowl.
Photo: Michael Murtaugh

W&P Collapsible Popcorn Bowl ($20 at the time of publication)

There’s no wrong way to enjoy popcorn, but if your valentine has been microwaving unimaginative bags of the prefab variety, a dedicated popcorn bowl that they can use with their own kernels and their own seasoning is a great upgrade. A favorite among the popping methods we’ve tried, this silicone bowl is dishwasher-safe and collapses to about 2 inches for easy storage. And it can pop up a bowl of the good stuff in just about two minutes.

Titillating tales

Kink: Stories book cover
Photo: Simon & Schuster

Kink: Stories ($16 at the time of publication)

As this anthology’s name suggests, the literary short fiction collected here examines love and desire, through journeys across bedrooms and therapists’ offices, modern sex clubs, and a 20th century Parisian sex theater. Edited by writers R.O. Kwon and Garth Greenwell, and featuring new works by literary darlings Alexander Chee, Roxane Gay, and Carmen Maria Machado, among others, this book is not a bedside read for just anyone on your gift list. But we do think it makes an excellent choice for an open-minded friend, or for a lover you’d like to explore its pages with.

For the aspiring home cook

The ingredients from a Blue Apron meal kit laid on on a table.

Blue Apron (prices vary depending on subscription)

If you’ve witnessed your loved one bingeing 100 hours of Bon Appétit videos, and they’ve started saying things like “This garnish really brightens up the dish,” a meal subscription is a perfect last-minute gift. Blue Apron is especially great for inexperienced cooks thanks to its straightforward recipes and wide range of meal options. Your valentine will be able to try new dishes, and it will give you two the opportunity to cook a meal together. Blue Apron even makes wine suggestions based on each meal, in case you want to add a celebratory bottle to the mix.

For the photo nerd

The Fujifilm Instax Square SQ6 instant camera.
Photo: Michael Hession

Fujifilm Instax Square SQ6 ($80 at the time of publication)

There’s something irresistible about an instant camera—it’s more fun to shoot with (and to see the results from) than the camera on a smartphone, and it avoids the usual pressure of taking a picture over and over until everything is perfect. If your loved one feels the same, they might like the Fujifilm Instax Square SQ6, our favorite instant camera. It’s easy to use, and in our tests it produced better-quality photos than other cameras we tried. This camera also comes with advanced features such as macro, landscape, and double-exposure modes, which set it apart from old-school instant cameras. Plus, you can choose from a variety of flash filter colors to add some spark to those nostalgia-induced party shots.

For the self-improver

The Masterclass logo.

MasterClass subscription ($180 for an annual subscription at the time of publication)

For the insatiable scholar (or just the person who has exhausted all the palatable content on Netflix), membership to MasterClass will prove to be an invaluable gift. Your valentine will be able to take a variety of virtual classes with famous instructors: cooking with Yotam Ottolenghi, skateboarding with Tony Hawk, writing with David Sedaris, acting with Natalie Portman, and on and on. It’s also a great gift for people with curious kids: Deputy editor Christine Cyr Clisset says, “My 7- and 5-year-old kids totally watched the Alice Waters cooking one by themselves, and my 7-year-old can now make an amazing salad dressing.” Now, that’s a gift that keeps on giving.

For the music fan

UE Ears Wonderboom 2 ($80 at the time of publication)

If your partner likes to listen to music outdoors or to sing in the shower with accompaniment, get them the UE Wonderboom 2, our favorite portable Bluetooth speaker under $100. It has a clear, full sound, it’s waterproof (in case that shower karaoke session gets out of hand), it can withstand a 5-foot drop, and it fits in nearly any bag.

For the bookworm

a person holds a Book of the Month gift card in their hands.
Photo: Book of the Month

Book of the Month ($15 a month at the time of publication)

For your literary loved one, a book subscription box that sends them a new hardback every month makes a fabulous gift. For those who would prefer an element of control—but don’t want to get overwhelmed with options—we like Book of the Month, which offers readers a choice among five recently released books (and also helps direct your giftee to more books they may want to check out later). The picks are always books released during the month in which they’re included, and they span a range of genres to keep your gift recipient engaged.

For the one with a sweet tooth

A box of Sugarwish candy with 8 individually sealed bags of different candy varieties.
Photo: Sugarwish

Sugarwish eCard (from $20 at the time of publication)

If you’re not totally sure what kinds of sweets your sweetie prefers, a great way to get around the problem is to send a customizable candy gift box Sugarwish eCard. With it, your gift recipient can select their favorites online, whether they like Sour Patch Kids, Jelly Bellys divvied up by flavor, or more esoteric offerings like Banana Heads (though if that last one is their favorite, we’d reconsider the relationship). Select the box size, eCard design, and delivery method (email or “messaging,” including text and social media). The eCard and a redeemable code then arrive on a day of your choosing to make it a sweet one for all involved.

For the always cold one

The Therm-a-Rest Honcho Poncho in dark green.
Photo: Therm-a-Rest

Therm-a-Rest Honcho Poncho ($115 at the time of publication)

While indoor hangs remain largely out of reach, give your loved one the gift of a warmer outdoor experience with what Wirecutter has dubbed the height of COVID fashion: a wearable sleeping bag. The Therm-a-Rest poncho technically skirts by that label and therefore looks just a bit more respectable, but what it shares with the competition is its water-resistant and breathable polyester fabric, which will keep your loved one oh-so-warm even during the coldest gatherings.

For the budding coffee connoisseur

The OXO Brew 9 Cup Coffee Maker sits on a kitchen counter with two coffee mugs nearby.
Photo: Michael Hession

OXO Brew 9 Cup Coffee Maker ($200 at the time of publication)

If your loved one is ready to level up their morning coffee, get them the OXO Brew 9 Cup Coffee Maker. It produces pour-over-quality brew, but with push-button ease. We’ve recommended the OXO for years and used it regularly in our office. We particularly like that the carafe keeps coffee warm without scorching the brew, that it has a programmable start time, and that it has an automatic pre-infusion cycle (which wets the coffee before brewing for better extraction).

For the persnickety sipper

Pink Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug sits on a table next to a phone, some keys, and a jacket.
Photo: Michael Hession

Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug (about $30 at the time of publication)

Whether your loved one commutes across town or shuffles across the apartment to work from the couch, the Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug is the best travel mug for keeping their drink hot and preventing leaks. We’ve tested the Zojirushi for four years running, and it has consistently kept liquids hotter than the competition, even after eight hours in the harsh environment of a freezer. This means your gift recipient’s morning java or tea will still be piping hot by the time they get to work—or find it in the kitchen after forgetting it there hours earlier. Either way, they’ll never have to suffer the disappointment of a tepid sip.

For the one who needs to chill

Asakuki 500ml Essential Oil Diffuser (about $25 at the time of publication)
Levoit Himalayan Salt Lamp ($20 at the time of publication)

The Asakuki 500ml Essential Oil Diffuser is a great gift for anyone who wants to make their living space smell and feel nicer. It’s slightly larger than the main pick in our essential oil diffuser guide, but we think its low profile and overall look make it a better gift. It produces a strong, rich stream of mist, and the tank will last longer than our main pick’s. To help your partner relax even more, we recommend the Levoit Himalayan Salt Lamp, which looks like something out of a Star Trek episode. We can’t speak to its supposed benefits, such as air purification and helping your loved one sleep, but it’s beautiful to look at and brings good vibes to a room.

For the one who needs better sleep

A person reads a book in bed, under the covers.

Snuggle-Pedic Memory Foam Body Pillow ($70 at the time of publication)
Baloo Cool Cotton Weighted Blanket ($170 at the time of publication)

A body pillow might not seem like an amazing Valentine’s Day gift, but if your special someone is a side- or stomach-sleeper and already likes to hug a pillow when they sleep, they might just love the Snuggle-Pedic Memory Foam Body Pillow (a favorite from our guide to body pillows). The shredded memory-foam fill molds precisely to the body and nicely supports hips, knees, and the abdomen; as a result, it can help reduce or eliminate aches and pains in the morning. (And this is why it would also make a good present for someone who is pregnant.)

If your partner has been curious about weighted blankets (or just likes the sensation of sleeping under piles of heavy comforters), they may like the Baloo Cool Cotton Weighted Blanket (pictured above). Some people find that sleeping under a weighted blanket helps them feel calmer and better rested (although there isn’t conclusive scientific evidence to back up those claims). The Baloo looks just like a comforter (you can even buy a lovely linen duvet cover for it). And unlike many other weighted blankets, this one can go right into the washer and dryer.

For the meditative one

Close-up of a phone with the Headspace app open and a session in progress.
Photo: Sarah Kobos

Headspace: Meditation & Sleep App ($70 for a yearly subscription at the time of publication)

A little guided meditation could be beneficial if your loved one has been feeling stressed lately, which they have, unquestionably. (Trust us.) Headspace is a great meditation tool that can help someone calm down on a particularly hard day—or week, or year—by encouraging them to take a moment for themselves. Our favorite of all the apps we tested for beginners and seasoned meditators alike, Headspace provides a wide variety of structured courses, as well as short meditations for the time-strapped. All your valentine needs to do is pop in their headphones and try to relax for a bit.

For the hard-to-wake

The Philips SmartSleep Connected Sleep and Wake-Up Light illuminated in a dark room

Philips SmartSleep Connected Sleep and Wake-Up Light ($180 at the time of publication)

Waking up can be hard, especially in the grim, gray winter of 2021. The SmartSleep light can’t fix everything that makes that so, but it can at least make the process of waking up a little less painful. Our upgrade-pick sunrise alarm clock, the SmartSleep features several brightness levels, alarm sounds, and sunrise options to perfectly rouse your lover into another morning.

For the stylish commuter

Rains Backpack Mini in black.
Photo: Michael Murtaugh

Rains Backpack Mini ($95 at the time of publication, plus $15 for two-day shipping)

The Rains Backpack Mini is super sleek and just big enough to hold a laptop, some books, and a light sweater (it’s one of our favorite laptop bags). And because it’s water resistant, it’s a good choice for someone who regularly forgets to bring their umbrella on their commute (which, optimistically, we hope to do again soon). Judging from our experience, we can assure you that the person you give this to can expect to get quite a few compliments. But you will have to pay $15 for expedited shipping if you need to get this item in a hurry.

We love finding gifts that are unusual, thoughtful, and well vetted. See even more Valentine’s Day gift ideas we recommend.

The beginning is always difficult

Over the past years, the world has witnessed the spread of electronic commerce, with the dependence on the Internet in the daily life of the inhabitants of the globe to complete their work and fulfill their needs.

I was one of those who were attracted by the idea https://www.aysim.net/ and started to establish a simple project. The beginning was to follow news about electronic commerce and success stories of a number of global markets.

When publishing the website on the Internet, I found it difficult to implement the idea and prepare the web for work. My ideas developed through videos, books and news related to e-commerce.

Today, I was able to launch my project in affiliate trading and affiliate service

Now there are no sales or financial resources, but the ministry is increasing every day and the comments are always positive https://www.aysim.net/

Five months is a lifetime

I know there is more effort and work to achieve success
